Janet Chvatal and Scott Kritzer In The Blue Hour We present new versions of arias and duets for voice and guitar in a chamber setting.
From Rock Hudson and Doris Day to Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt, there have been performers whose chemistry is so convincing it's hard to believe they're not romantically linked beyond the stage or screen.
The voice-and-guitar duo of Janet Chvatal and Scott Kritzer is like that. You could be forgiven for assuming they're married -- they are, just not to each other -- because their affectionate rapport could put most couples to shame. Their concert Sunday afternoon at the Church of St. John the Baptist, on the campus of Oregon Episcopal School, came across like an aftershock from Valentine's Day.

Bronika Kushkuley Bronika Kushkuley, In concert
Beautiful and agile classical piano covering styles from Bach to Prokofiev
Boston Globe correspondent Richard Buell in his review of her concert, May 27, 1998:
"... the sheer fluency, accuracy, variety of tone, and articulation she could call upon was scarcely to be believed. That she seemed to be offering a real, even highly personal, interpretation of everything she played was even more remarkable".
He described the performance of Sarabande movement of Bach's G Minor English Suite as:
"Soulful and inward in emotion, subtly flexible as to phrasing and tempo, the performance spoke familiarly of matters that no 10-year-old - not even 10-year-old Albert Schweitzer - could know of".
Richard Buell concluded his review of the concert with the following remark: '"... the performances of Haydn's F-Major Sonata, the Ravel "Oiseaux tristes", Schumann's Abegg Variations, not to mention the shorter gee-whiz pieces, were ones that many an adult professional wouldn't disown".

Hsia-Jung Chang Chopin Impromptus Ballades Berceuse
Wordless poetry from the Romantic Era; captivating and dazzling works by the Poet of the Piano, Frederic Chopin.
Hsia-Jung's first encounter with the music of Frédéric Chopin was hearing the Etude Op. 10 No.3 freely transcribed on the guitar as an impromptu lullaby by her mother, Taiwanese musician Ho Lan. Perhaps that first impression of Chopin from her infant days predisposed Hsia-Jung's ears toward hearing exotic musical influences in the works of the famous Polish patriot. Biographies of the Pole in exile often emphasize the Polishness in his music: the Mazurkas, the Polonaises, the Revolutionary Etude, etc. Yet could it be that Chopin, the extremely well-traveled composer, was never captivated by music from other cultures? The liner notes contain a witty self interview in which the pianist puts forward musicological substantiations on the un-Polish influences in Chopin's music and challenges various traditional views on these well-known works. Hsia-Jung's interpretation of the four Ballades was hailed by critic Harris Goldsmith as:

Richard Fuller, Fortepiano Mozart Klavierwerke 1
Richard Fuller plays Mozart on a 1795 fortepiano replica with his graceful articulation complemented by the instrument's rich tonal colour.
The performances are light, touching, unaffected, as on the first movement of K330, a sonata that many students have played. Fuller follows its naturally joyous flow, never exaggerating expressive devices, while showing some flexibility of tone and tempo." Fanfare Magazine, May/June 2002.
Richard Fuller was born in Washington State (USA), studied piano and musicology at Central Washington University and the University of Oregon. He studied harpsichord and fortepiano in San Francisco and Vienna. The emphasis of his artistic work lies in the interpretation of the piano, chamber music and the Lied repertoire of the Viennese Classical and early Romantic periods, performed on the fortepiano and clavichord.
