Emily Hurd - The Barefoot Session

A little blues, a little gypsy, a little soul—Emily has comfortably arrived at a musical place that’s all her own.

NOTES
Big lyrics and a sound to match. Emily Hurd’s creative and performance savvy is fresh, evocative, and bold. She cuts her songs from the stuff of life and then delivers them with strong vocals and vintage keys.

A little blues, a little gypsy, a little soul—Emily has comfortably arrived at a musical place that’s all her own. Punctuated rhythms, burgeoning swells, deep longing. Her rich and inflective voice fills each song with its own distinctive texture. She records mostly live on an old acoustic piano and likes the challenge of performance integrity in the recording studio.

Emily, a.k.a. “Em”, started playing piano at age six in the outskirts of Rockford, IL. Since then, music has never left her side, following her from private instruction in the classics, to some pretty serious study at Northwestern University, out to the East Coast on a culinary stint, and all the way back to Chicago where she lives today.

Lyman Medeiros and the Lower Level
The Funky Supervillain

Combines elements of funk, jazz, and R&B with emphasis on individual improvisation.

The Funky Supervillain is composer/bassist Lyman Medeiros' first studio recording as a leader. After touring the world performing to enthusiastic audiences as a sideman for acclaimed vocalists Steve Tyrell and Michael Buble, the album marks a departure from the world of standards for Medeiros.

The music is rooted in Medeiros's upright bass grooves exploring different styles of funk, jazz, and R&B with a strong emphasis on improvisation and individual expression. The Lower Level is comprised of world-class jazz musicians including Lou Soloff (trumpet legend and founding member of Blood, Sweat, and Tears) and Tom Brechtlein (former drummer with Freddie Hubbard, Joe Farrell, and Robin Ford and Blue Line, currently touring with Chick Corea) amongst others. The album features a basic trio (bass, keys, and drums) with another soloist; either guitarist Steve Cotter (Joey DeFransesco, Bobby Caldwell), vocalist Jessica Vautor, or trumpeter Soloff

KIM STONE

BASSIST/COMPOSER

Following a four year stint with east coast based Spyro Gyra, bassist Kim Stone headed west in 1990 to join the world renowned Rippingtons. Their latest release, Life In The Tropics, entered the Billboard Contemporary Jazz charts at number two.

Kim's other credits include working with such greats as B. B. King, David Benoit, Steve Reid's Bamboo Forest, the David Benoit/Russ Freeman Project, Larry Carlton, Eric Marienthal, Jeff Kashiwa, Rob Mullins, Paul Taylor, Jessica Williams, and Firefall. His extensive performing experience includes multiple appearances at the prestigious Montreux, North Sea, Newport, Kool, JVC, and Playboy jazz festivals as well as numerous nationwide tours of the U.S., Europe, and Southeast Asia.

An innovative composer, Kim has had several of his songs recorded, most notably, Bob Goes to the Store, which was selected by Spyro Gyra as the featured video from their Breakout CD. This composition was such a favorite of theirs that they also included it on their recent release, The Best of Spyro Gyra (The First Ten Years ). In addition, Kim has received five Grammy nominations for four records with Spyro Gyra and one with Rare Silk.

In 1999 Kim released his first solo CD entitled "More Often Than Not". His most recent release, Lets Cool One, was released in 2002.
