Adi Braun : The Rules Of The Game
Biography & Reviews
Combining nostalgia of yesteryear with the clarity of today, Adi Braun evokes, with her sophisticated style and subtle delivery, such vocal and dramatic greats as Sarah Vaughan, Lotte Lenya, Judy Garland and Rosemary Clooney. Her repertoire ranges from standards of the American songbook to European cabaret and contemporary gems by composers such as Canada’s Shirley Eikhard and Gordon Lightfoot. Whether she is singing in English, French, Spanish or German, Adi Braun is “a power-frau who gives jazz standards a unique touch, telling stories that are miniature life moments” (Rheinische Post, Düsseldorf, Germany).
“If you’re a fan of high-grade vocal work with assured confidence, superb diction, sharp timing and a theatrical flair for the dramatic… time to meet Adi Braun… a jazz singer with a bold vocal delivery crammed with character and a signature versatile approach.” — Geoff Chapman, The Toronto Star

Alex Pangman : Live In Montreal
Biography & Reviews
Recorded in front of an audience for Radio Canada Alex shows us once again she is without a doubt one of the best interpreters of material dating back to the early roots of jazz. She sings with conviction and makes you believe she has experienced all that the lyrics portray. Like Mildred Bailey in the early 1930's, Alex has a means of setting benchmarks for the music and has developed a style that is instantly recognizable.
Backed by a superb band comprising of Kevin Clark - trumpet, Ross Wooldridge - clarinet/sax, Danny Douglas - trombone, Jesse Barksdale - guitar, Cheong Liu - bass, Peter Hill - piano and Chris Lamont - drums, who get plenty of opportunities to solo.
Highlights include her provocative rendition of "Sweetheart I'm Yours" and "Through the Courtesy of Love", bouncy happy tones on "Sing You Sinners" and "Serenade in the Night".
The band fulfils their roles perfectly on "Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gives to Me", one of two strictly instrumental tunes, the other "Dinah" also shows the rapport they have with each other, at times sounding a lot like middle period Eddie Condon's gang.
This is an exceptional recording that belongs in your collection, and a worthy introduction to you who have not heard of this remarkable songbird.
"Highly Recommended!"

Besharah : Cereal Suits
Biography & Reviews
With a distinctive style often described as "Roxy Music meets Weather Report", Besharah got it's sophisticated edge from the combined talents of its' two founding members, vocalist Lizzie Shanks and virtuoso acoustic guitarist Brandon Scott. Arabic in origin, the name Besharah means "coincidental occurrence, fated to be". A perfect handle since Shanks and Scott were introduced by a well-meaning musician friend who had a strong sense of what these two might be capable of creating.
A short eighteen months after that first meeting, Besharah's first CD cereal suits has just recently been released to critical acclaim. It features 12 strongly crafted original tracks, as well as a sultry yet souped-up version of Gershwin's oft recreated but never like this, Summertime. John Sakamoto of the Toronto Sun placed the pair 4th on his anti-hit list, calling them, "a promising Toronto duo whose music is reminiscent of Hejira-era Joni Mitchel, coupled with anything written by Dave Matthews in a minor key".

Dawn Aitken : Be Cool
Biography & Reviews
Dawn Aitken is a consummate performer plus and accomplished and sought-after vocalist and actress. She brings a wealth of performance and creative experience to each engagement she plays, while captivating the audience with her lush," low and throatily rich"(The Globe and Mail) voice. Compared at times with artists such as Phoebe Snow and Peggy Lee, Ms. Aitken's lyrical interpretation and versatility have lent themselves well to her rich and varied career.
Originally student to the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, in the late-70's, Ms. Aitken became well known on the cabaret and night club circuit where she played numerous and acclaimed solo performance engagements. "She has the wonderful ability to take a note and roll it over her tongue, making it sound big and fat and rich and then contrast that with light, subtle, almost airy tones."(The Globe and Mail). This soon led to popular and heralded performances in Toronto musicals such as the hit Broadway show,"Pump boys and Dinettes" and the originally conceived musical review (created and performed with three like-minded, career singers), entitled"Bar Girls". In the 1980's Ms. Aitken's career then took her south to Chicago where she could be found headlining at the "Ritz Carlton Hotel" or performing at such local hot spots as the "Bulls Jazz Club" where she played to packed houses and standing ovation

Eric Van Aro : Friends
Biography & Reviews
Singer Eric van Aro and his musician friends break new grounds interpreting modern standards by Gino Vannelli, Stevie Wonder, Stephen Sondheim and Led Zeppelin among others, as well as songs with lyrics penned by Eric himself. His jazz influences come through loudly and clearly on Vannellis “PUT THE WEIGHT ON MY SHOULDERS” which includes a masterful trumpet solo by Franco Ambrosetti and “MILES BLOWIN” a tune originally sung by Chaka Khan. Led Zeppelin’s “FRIENDS”(the title track) gets an updated and essential sound and speaks clearly about the theme of the album: Friendship! “THE PAINTING IN MY HEART” (a van Aro original) is an ode to Sundance in the state of Utah and his painter friend Billy Szaggars. “WON’T PLAY NO MORE”, a legendary Italian blues originally sung by Mina with Toots Thielemans on Harmonica, gets the bayou treatment, with english lyrics by Van Aro. Stevie Wonders “MISSTRA KNOW-IT-ALL” and Peter Allen’s “NOT THE BOY NEXT DOOR” both take a trip to up beat Latin America, while Bruno de Filippi’s amazing Harmonica underlines the dramatic vein of “THE GERSHWIN TAYLOR KING MEDLEY”. Throughout the album Eric’s voice always comes over in an emotively compelling manner that matches the depths of the excellent compositions. The sum total of this album bends the rules without breaking the spirit of the songs, managing to be instantly attractive yet certain without any doubt to reward listeners for years to come. Eric van Aro was born into an Italian/German Artist family with a highly cosmopolitan background: In fact he is the son of the internationally known Singer Caterina Valente and Producer and ex-juggler Erik van Aro Sr..

Julie Mahendran : Never Do Without You
Biography & Reviews A great voice. What else is there to say about this young Canadian jazz vocalist? Plenty- but what tends to amaze audiences the most is her unique and memorable sound. Julie’s voice has a clarity, power and soul that has been compared to both Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday; more contemporary vocal influences run the gamut from jazz divas like Natalie Cole and Diane Schuur to pop and R&B icons like Annie Lennox and Whitney Houston.
She was a disco queen at age six, an 80’s pop princess in her teens, and through it all ran the thread of classical piano lessons… then she discovered jazz. Her exploration of jazz music began at the Grant MacEwan College music program in Edmonton. While learning to be versatile in the performance of a wide variety of musical styles, Julie’s greatest joy came from the exploration and interpretation of a well-crafted song. Now she has also begun to discover her own musical style as a songwriter, blending together all her childhood and scholastic influences.
