Chantal Chamberland : Serendipity Street
Biography & Reviews Chantal Chamberland’s latest CD, Serendipity Street, is a passionate labour of love… sweet, sassy, sultry and sad.
Not only does it revisit the standards, it offers intimate originals, some penned by Chamberland herself, others written as collaborative efforts.
A native of St. Lambert, Quebec, Chantal Chamberland was raised in Montreal on the music of Edith Piaf, Ella Fitzgerald and Artie Shaw. Eventually, she moved to Ontario to pursue her own musical dreams and, of equal importance, to learn how to speak English.
Chamberland launched her professional career as part of an acoustic folk-rock duo, performing at venues and festivals throughout North America. During these years, she was asked to share the stage with such notables as Sarah McLachlan and the Barenaked Ladies. She then took a brief sabbatical during which she began exploring new areas of music and experimenting in a genre that had always been close to her heart – Jazz. With that, she embarked on what promised to be the most gratifying adventure of her career.

Daniel Barnes : Culmination
Biography & Reviews " The new quintet co-led by pianist Dave Restivo and drummer Daniel Barnes...seem to have it all. Fine, evocative tunes of modernist design, Strong soloists. Lot's of poise. The makings of a collective identity that wasn't apparent seven months ago when the four of these five musicians played at George's Jazz Room. The six tunes on Monday were the work of the two principals and their saxophonist Mike Murley, all of whom also carried a heavy solo load. Kevan Turcotte and Jim Vivian filled out the band. There's not a weak link among the five. They stand with the best of their generation in Canada.
"This recording is an important statement by a very fine Canadian musician."
"Culmination is an eclectic and multi-textured CD. Daniel has embraced his numerous creative and diverse musical experiences, and synthesized a compositional style that is uniquely his, yet culled from a variety of far-reaching influences."
"...an appetizing fare of mainstream and "contemporary jazz"
"Barnes knows his way with a tune..."
"...superb playing and technique."
"...it is a striking recording."
"The material on Culmination consists of seven original compositions, and five "standards" cleverly and uniquely arranged by Barnes."

Geoff Young Trio : In Between
Biography & Reviews
Geoff Young Trio : [in between] Romhog Rating: ****
By Mark Miller - Globe & Mail How does a jazz guitarist, Geoff Young, set himself apart in a city renowned for its jazz guitarists, Toronto? Simple: He leaves the electric guitar at home. That, at least, is the unexpected but entirely successful strategy here. Young's acoustic guitar work is clear and tidy, his attack understated (though still more John McLaughlin than, say, Ralph Towner) and his tunes and solos attractively melodic. Bassist Jim Vivian and drummer Barry Romberg make sure that no one will mistake [in between] for anything but a jazz album, but it's Young's bold initiative and thoughtful execution that makes it so much more.

Misinterprotato : In Is In
Biography & Reviews
Misinterprotato are an Australian contemporary trio of piano/bass/drums. Formed in 1999 whilst studying at the conservatory in Brisbane the group released their acclaimed debut "now for the free" in 2003 to wide critical acclaim with the Sydney Morning Herald calling them "full of brilliant promise." With a sound mature beyond their years and featuring all original material the trio have performed all over Australia and at the Calgary jazz festival Canada,World Expo Japan and studied at the Banff Centre with leading American and Canadian artists. In July 2005 the trio released "In is In" a record filled with emotion and space and rich in texture and vitality.
mReviews: MISINTERPROTATO In Is In (Jazz Head)
Much like their debut Now For The Free, Australia’s most forward-thinking contemporary jazz trio recorded their latest album over a livid and inspired live studio session. The result is an album that boldly walks the thin chalk-line between pulse-settling reflection and gloriously unhinged, hep-fuelled disorder.
Famed for their brash approach to composition and instrumentation, the Brisbane outfit make discriminating use of distortion, modified piano, cello and percussion within the bold framework of their original compositions.
As infinitely listenable as it is gallant and challenging, In Is In should, and will, find its way into the CD collection of anyone whose heart swells at the sound of something honest, joyful and brimming with life.
