...I had a bit of a listening session last night and decided to play "The Queen is Dead" by the Smiths on vinyl. I looked at the record cover and in an instant, my mind was flooded with memories.

I remembered buying it in HMV Sunderland after school and how excited I was when I first lowered the stylus. I remembered taking it to university and then having to take it to a new home every year as I moved from halls to dingy digs. I remembered how shit I felt when she dumped me. I remembered the week when I went clubbing every day of the week (even Sunday) to get over it.

I remembered proposing to someone much nicer (she said "Yes"). I remembered going to the hospital to bring my new son home. I remembered how son number 2 first arrived at home five minutes before the midwife did. I reminded myself that I'm a lucky, lucky bastard.

This may be sentimental bollocks, but I genuinely had all these memories last night just by looking at the record cover. It's not because I'm obsessive about the Smiths. It's because that record, and many others I bought during the 80s, has been with me through thick and thin. I've got nothing against CDs, downloads, MP3 or DAB. If you love music, you should not let the format get in the way. I can't get emotionally attached to these formats though and never will.

Vinyl may be a pain to maintain and play, but within the (sometimes tatty) covers and grooves, is some of your history. Cables certainly do not matter. Heck, even hi-fi doesn't matter. The 20 year old piece of vinyl with four badly dressed Mancs on the inner gatefold that I bought for £6 with my pocket money - matters to me very much....."
