Mike Tabares - Passionate Blues

Electric blues that covers Chicago, New Orleans, and Texas styles in a blues meltdown

Born in Detroit, Mike spent his musically formative years in Texas where he first caught the blues bug via the recorded works of Lightnin' Sam Hopkins " I still like that acoustic sound," says Mike.

Times being what they were it didn't take long for Mike to discover the electrified blues of Paul Butterfield, and through that the genre's giants like "B.B. and Freddy King, Buddy Guy, and other musicians like them. His musical interests were varied enough to incorporate a range of styles. "Anything rootsy, from jazz to country. But I always kept coming back to the blues."

The Mike Kocour Trio
High standards

"High Standards" features a world-class jazz piano trio playing classic jazz standards.

Want a good look into the soul of a group of jazz musicians? Ask them to play a standard. No matter how much technique players have at their disposal, how much harmonic theory is under their fingers, how intense their energy or how clever the formal tricks whittled into their original compositions, playing a standard is like swallowing truth serum. New or complex material can mask weaknesses, while the familiarity of a tune like "Body and Soul" makes it a more transparent test of fundamental musicianship. If you can't improvise with true melodic and harmonic integrity, if you can't swing, if you can't shape a performance with narrative cohesion, spontaneity and an authoritative command of the vernacular, a standard will set the record straight after only a few choruses. There is no place to hide.

Mike DiBari Trio
Rotary Ahead!

From Swing to Bop with a little bit of the Mississippi Delta thrown in, guitarist Mike DiBari & his trio deliver "A potent mix of jazz and blues that always swings." -Just Jazz Guitar

"Play[s] good guitar all over."
- DOWN BEAT MAGAZINE
"Among the best swing guitarists in New England."
- JIM CARTY, WMFO 91.5 FM

Guitarist/Composer Mike DiBari's new CD release is a delight for both jazz and blues fans alike. The Boston area musician, who has spent the last ten years on the thriving local blues/R&B scene, combines his roots in the blues with a passion for jazz. "When I got more serious about playing jazz I didn't want to let go of what I learned from all those great players like B.B King and T-Bone Walker. My goal was to create a style where I could go from blues to Charlie Christian to Thelonious Monk and everything in between, all at the same time." On Rotary Ahead! Mike achieves what he set out for. In the opener Billie's Bounce, a Charlie Parker tune in the classic Bebop tradition, you can hear swirling Jazz lines intertwined with blistering Blues licks. DiBari's jazz chops are further confirmed on Fly Me To the Moon, which opens with signature Wes Montgomery style octaves, and later unravels with consecutive choruses of double time runs a la Pat Martino.

Joe Diorio
20th Century Impressions

Avant-guarde exploratory jazz with Vinnie Calauita on drums and Jeff Berlin on Bass

"20th Century Impressions Finally available on CD is this legendary recording that has long excited anyone lucky enough to have heard it when it was released in 1981 on vinyl. Guitarist Joe Diorio is in peak form along with Jeff Berlin on bass and Vinnie Colaiuta on drums. The opening track, Space Shuttle Shuffle, is a marvel of group interplay featuring Diorio's trademark intervallic improvisation and some of the best soloing from Berlin on record. Colaiuta fans will be particularly excited to hear him play modern jazz in this context without any creative constraints, pushed by two virtuosos. Flamenco Impressions highlights the group's sensitivity and is followed by a beautiful rendition of the Mancini standard, The Days of Wine and Roses, which finds the trio swinging hard.
