Madeleine Peyroux - Careless Love
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com When Madeleine Peyroux's debut, Dreamland, was released in 1996, its success threw her for a loop. She's taken eight years to create this follow-up, and, at age 30, she brings a confidence and resilience to this dozen-song set. She's able to move seamlessly between songs by writers as diverse as Elliott Smith and W.C. Handy, whose title track was popularized by Bessie Smith. Though American-born, Peyroux absorbed the language and culture of France growing up in Paris with her French-teacher mother. On her debut, she covered Edith Piaf, and this time out she wraps herself around "J'ai Deux Amours," which Josephine Baker sang to the Allied troops during World War II. --David Greenberger

Live at the House of Tribes [LIVE] Wynton Marsalis
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com Wynton Marsalis headlines this lively, Night of the Cookers-type gig, recorded in Manhattan in 2002. Joining him on the frontline is his long-time partner, alto saxophonist Wessell "Warmdaddy" Anderson, backed by a rhythm section featuring bassist Kengo Nakarmura, drummers Robert Rucker and Joe Farnsworth, and pianist, Eric Lewis. The material is what you would expect on informal set like this: A riffing romp through Thelonious Monk's "Green Chimney’s," two bouncy renditions of "Just Friends," and "What is This Thing Called Love," the enduring ballad, "You Don’t Know What Love Is," Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee," delivered at bop-speed, and Paul Barbarin's Crescent City chaser, "2nd Line." Add percussionist Orlando Q. Rodriguez's Latin tinges and brother Delfeayo's on-point production to Marsalis’s flawless flights, and you have a document that captures improvisation in the heat of performance, forged by the sacred give-and-take between the artist and the audience. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Remember: A Tribute to Wes Montgomery Pat Martino
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com Will the last remaining jazz guitarist who hasn't recorded a tribute to Wes Montgomery please turn off the control board after he does? Yes, there have been a ton of salutes, but that shouldn't lessen interest in Pat Martino's Remember, which in having a guitarist of considerable stature in his own right cast personal meaning on Montgomery's strikingly original bop-meets-Django style covers all the bases a tribute should. Wes fans will enjoy hearing songs associated with him, ranging from his own "Full House" to the Cannonball Adderley classic, "Unit 7." Fans of Martino, a product of Philadelphia's soul-jazz scene of the late-'60s for whom Indianan Montgomery was a conquering hero, will enjoy hearing his speedier, flame-treated approach to the material and his knowingly spare use of Montgomery's patented octave runs. Since bravely coming back from a 1980 brain aneurism that forced him to relearn the guitar, Martino has had some impressive outings (as well as ones that succumbed to high concepts). Leading a keenly focused quintet including the perennially underrated pianist David Kikoski and bassist John Patitucci, he resets the bar for himself. --Lloyd Sachs
