Beautiful Joe - Cover Up

Five piece roots/country band fronted by singer/fiddle and acoustic guitar player Jane Hawley and produced by Brian Ahern (Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell, George Jones, Johnny Cash)

In December 1997, legendary Nashville-based producer Brian Ahern (Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash, George Jones, Roy Orbison) ventured to Calgary, AB. to record a weeks worth of live performances for a band called Beautiful Joe. This was to be a pre-production exercise that would be a lead up to the band making a studio recording in Nashville. Ahern brought with him three coffin-sized cases of vintage recording equipment, as well as his cronies Miles Wilkinson (Guy Clark, Willie Nelson) and Mark Lambert (Leon Russell), to assist in the recording process. This collective set up shop in the basement of a MacLeod Trail roadhouse called Bullshooter’s and got down to business.

Beautiful Joe had taken their name from a children’s book written in 1892 by Margaret Marshall Saunders. It was a wonderful piece of non-fiction about a famous dog that lived in Meaford, ON and the book sold over 1 million copies. The band came together during the recording of Jane Hawley’s 1996 solo recording “Letters To Myself”. They jelled immediately and it wasn’t long before they were performing to enthusiastic crowds wherever they played. Their performances varied from wonderful nights at the Twin Cities Hotel in Longview, AB to jam-packed gigs at Toronto’s Horseshoe Tavern and Matador Club (where Jane thought she saw a lot of men dancing without their shirts on, only to realize that they were fighting and not dancing). They also did a great performance on the Rita MacNeill television show shown nationally on CTV. They shared that evening with Blue Rodeo.

Karla Anderson
The Embassy Sessions

- achingly beautiful and as emotionally honest as a recording can be.

Karla Anderson

BIO
December 2005

Karla Anderson was honored with the Best New / Emerging Artist award at the Canadian Folk Music Awards held December 10/05 in Ottawa, ON, Canada.

On February 11/ 2005, the hit American television series “Joan of Arcadia” featured a song written and performed by a little know singer / songwriter from Stony Plain, AB. , Canada. The artist was Karla Anderson, (a single mother with three sons), and the song was “What Else Can I Do?” The song, and it’s performance, generated immediate response, as people from Germany, South Africa, The Netherlands, Israel, Demark, and all over North America fell in love with the lyrics and performance of this beautiful and delicate song. Karla was flooded with requests for the song and on July 29 of this year her album “The Embassy Sessions” was released. Backed by a stellar band including veteran Nashville drummer, Kenny Malone (Nancy Griffith, John Prine, Tim O’Brien), guitar player Keith Glass (Prairie Oyster, Lynn Miles) and renowned bass player, Mike Lent (k.d. lang, Jann Arden), the disc was recorded over a three day period in a strange and beautiful old mansion called the Red Motel Embassy in Calgary, AB. It is “live” off the floor, recorded with no monitors and no headphones - just four players, playing to the room and to each other. The results are achingly beautiful and as emotionally honest as a recording can be.

The summer saw Karla playing a number of festival dates, including the Edmonton Folk Festival. Karla was a featured performer in a CBC National Television special called “Alberta Bound " A Centennial Celebration” that also included performances by k.d. lang, Nickelback, Ian Tyson and Jann Arden. Her album topped the sales charts wherever it was available and radio has embraced the disc in Canada and the US.

Hayward Williams
Trench Foot

Who knows how he did it, but he has already written a few songs that any self-respecting songwriter would give an arm to have done. Watch him like a hawk. Track his movements. This could get hairy." -Peter Mulvey

"As a huge Peter Mulvey fan, I had to go a bit ballistic over this album. Throw in some qualities reminiscent of Greg Brown as well, and you've got one promising album to look forward to. Wrapping up folky blues and hints of rootsy country and country folk rock, Hayward Williams is one of the most compelling artists rising on the scene these days. With a gorgeous blend of ache, gristle and whiskey-toned gruffness, his songs walk a perfect line between the sweet and bitter, the sentimental and cynical."
-CD Baby

"Hayward Williams' earnestly jaunty folk-rock might seem anachronistic in the prevailing musical atmosphere of self-conscious irony, but his combination of melody, restraint, and unabashed enthusiasm saves the day. Williams also boasts a voice that sounds several decades older than he actually is, lending his songs of love and loss a gravity they might not otherwise possess."
-The Onion

"... There is an ease about him that could be called the mark of the real deal. His songs are confessional, accusatory, and above all, conversational..."
