Teed Rockwell - Hindustani Ragas

Traditional Hindustani Music performed with Tabla accompaniment on the Touchstyle Fretboard. Touchstyle fretboards are played by tapping the strings onto the fretboard with the fingertips, instead of plucking them.

For over thirty years, Teed Rockwell has been playing many forms of world music on the touchstyle fretboard—a guitar-like instrument which is played by tapping the strings with the fingertips, making it possible to play a separate part with each hand. Rockwell performed in concerts and recordings with traditional musicians from many different cultures, including South America, Africa, China, and Ireland. But his greatest musical love has long been the Hindustani ragas of Northern India.

Rockwell originally studied Hindustani ragas to find material for the fusion music he composed with harpist Diana Stork in the world music trio Geist. He performed this music at manywell known concert halls, including Grace Cathedral, Great American Music Hall, the Yerba Buena center, and the Herbst Theater. Geist toured Europe, receiving international airplay and sales for their CD More Light. They were featured on the Polygram compilation album Harpestry, which reached the top ten on a Billboard chart, and has so far sold over 150,000 copies.

songs of sara p. smith

Beautiful songwriting: from hummingbirds to alleys, sara p. smith is the real deal.

Dizzy Gillespie, Carla Bley, The Blue Meanies, John Hollenbeck, Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus,Sam Taylor, Jr., Bernadette Peters,Smokey Hormel…What do these and many more have in common? They have had Sara P. Smith playing music with them!

PLEASE KEEP READING FOR INFO ON MORE GREATS PLAYING
“SONGS OF SARA P. SMITH”

Sara P. Smith hails from the desert around and about Tucson AZ. Most of her career has been as a trombone player. Sps has travelled and recorded internationally lending her trombone sound to the records of really great groovy people like Tortoise, Shivaree, Henri, and Tracey Theilen. Sara was based out of Chicago for much of the 90’s where she was part of the bands Isotope 217(“The Unstable Molecule”-Thrill Jockey) and The Chicago Underground Orchestra(“Playground”-Delmark) .
Smith moved back home after a decade away and ernestly began her songwriting. Rather, she put down her horn and listened as the songs began to form. Ms. Smith loves to write songs and play them on the piano and sing them. She loves lizards and making kids laugh. Currently her favorite color is yellow/saffron.
Her new album: SONGS OF SARA P. SMITH is extremely special. Its beauty and magic run deep. Sara’s songs are performed by others on this disc-vocalists MARTHA WAINWRIGHT, AMBROSIA PARSLEY, ERIK DELLA PENNA, AND ED PASTORINI. ED plays pianos as well, next to JEFF HILL on basses and GEORGE JAVORI on drums. There are dynamite strings arranged by the illustrious JANE SCARPANTONI who also plays cello on the album.
The vision began with a demo mailed by sps to her friend DUKE MCVINNIE.
Duke decided a record was in order and being the visionary he is he took Sara’s voice/piano collection and came up with the collection of musicians named above.
Duke co-produced the record with BRANDON MASON , who engineered it. And we all had a ball at the studio that is tops so far in my book : Allaire Studios in New York State.
