Dorothy Doring - Southern Exposure
Twin Cities vocalist Dorothy Doring's 2005 CD, recorded in New Orleans with some of the city's hottest players, is a sublime collection of jazz standards and some gritty hints of blues.
Dorothy Doring is a Minnesota-based vocalist with a unique sense for musical style, a charismatic stage presence and a voice that exudes passion and experience. Dorothy's new release, "Southern Exposure" (2005 Quarter Note Records), was recorded in New Orleans with producer/pianist David Torkanowsky and a crew of world-renowned Crescent City musicians. Surrounded by the sounds and flavors of her second musical "home," Dorothy Doring is clearly inspired by the city down the Mississippi River. "Southern Exposure" is a collection infused with the tasteful care of exquisite musicianship and the nuance and depth of a singer long-immersed in the art of the jazz standard.

Carole Martin Songs From My Heart
Carole Martin is a Torch Singer in the classic style, rendering emotional readings of exquisitely chosen songs.
Carole Martin's 2004 release "Pieces of Dreams" was described as "the finest jazz-vocal CD from the Twin Cities in many a moon" in the Minneapolis Star Tribune. That was her first recording since 1968, but Carole's fans and admirers don't need to wait decades for the follow up - her new CD "Songs From My Heart" has arrived. With titles like "Time for Love," "I Concentrate On You," "Little Girl Blue" and "Canadian Sunset," Carole's pure, emotional, alto vocals do indeed come straight from her heart. Buoyed by the warm reception of her last release, as well as packed houses and standing ovations from the visibly moved crowds at her "comeback" shows, Carole moves ever deeper into the American songbook - and her craft - on the new release. Carole is an elegant stage pro and a gripping torch singer, imbued with savvy, entirely without affectation. New York City pianist Rick Germanson (noted for work with Elvin Jones, Pat Martino and many others), bassist Terry Burns and drummer Kenny Horst join Carole on the CD.

Sony Holland I Get Around
Sony's clear tone and full arsenal of vocal charms take center stage over these elegantly sparse piano and bass arrangements.
This CD was recorded just prior to Sony's "welcome home" concert at The Empire Plush Room in San Francisco and includes the songs from the show.
Exquistely recorded and played, Sony's vocal charm bursts out all over the CDs 13 well varied tracks. Warming up the crowd with a couple of beautifully rendered standards, the action heats up with a series of superbly crafted originals. Ken Muir's smart arrangements provide the perfect support. Nick Levinovsky Kind Of Red
Straight Ahead Original Jazz Sextet Compositions with drive, flair and soul.
"...an excellent composer/pianst and talented band leader" CADENCE
As a young boy growing up in Saratov in the former Soviet Union, Nick Levinovsky was expected to become a classical pianist or orchestral conductor. His parents, both opera singers, started their son on the piano at age 6. Gifted though he was, Levinovsky nevertheless drifted through his musical training until one day when his father tuned their short-wave radio to the Voice of America and jazz entered Levinovsky's life for the first time. "I was knocked out," Levinovsky recalls about that day when he was just 13. He had never heard music so alive, music that spoke directly to him. "Jazz turned my life upside down," and from then on Levinovsky knew what he wanted to do, what he had to do -- be a jazzman.

Tresa Sauer Groovin' Up Slowly
Tresa Sauer applies her engaging vocals to a variety of composers from Lennon/McCartney to Cole Porter to Bob Marley, backed by elite Twin Cities jazz musicians
With an evocative vocal style favoring tastefully-intelligent restraint over flash, Tresa Sauer has a cool, but undeniable passion that can tease, warm, caress, and question. Choosing her material from a rich variety of sources, selections include the Beatles' "Come Together," a pair of Bacharach compositions, some standards as re-considered by Sauer, and a wistful twist on Bob Marley's "Waiting in Vain." This is the work of a singer not limited by musical eras and focuses on what she can bring to a song. Not surprisingly, her debut recording "Groovin' Up Slowly" (Cry Out Loud / 2005 ) was chosen by Mpls/St. Paul Magazine for inclusion in its 2005 year-end guide to the "Best of the Twin Cities!"
Aside from her own engaging style, accompanying her are top-flight Twin Cities' musicians Gordy Johnson (bass), Clay Moore (guitar), Chris Lomheim (piano/Rhodes/B3), Michael Pilhofer (drums), Jim Chenoweth (bass), and accordionist Billy Brown, who joins her on a cheeky version of "I Only Have Eyes For You." Sauer herself plays piano on two tracks, and all but one of the arrangements belong to her.
Tresa Sauer took her time and Groovin' Up Slowly proves worth the wait.
