GR20 Reviews

March 2001 Monitor Audio Sets Standard
For: Fast and dynamic sound with bags of resolution; fine bass weight Against: Nothing of significance Verdict: An excellent product from Monitor Audio that deserves to continue the long-standing success of the old Studio 20Ses
Monitor Audio's Studio 20Ses became something of a hi-fi legend, taking pride of place in one of our reference systems for many years. However, now that the company is under new management, the Studio series has been discontinued, although the 2Ses and 20Ses continue in production as the Heritage range. This doesn't mean, though, that Monitor Audio has given up on the high-end sector. Far from it. The Studio range is replaced by the Gold Reference series, and the GR 20 is the model Monitor Audio sees as the natural successor to the Studio 20Ses.
Initial impressions are good. The cabinets are superbly built, and the veneer is first rate, giving them an air of real quality. As for sound, those who liked the 20SEs will recognise some of their character in the new model. There's the same resolution and insight that made the 20Ses such a great tool for reviewing: recordings are opened up for inspection, and the impression is of speakers that leave no stone unturned in the search for detail.
Play a commercial pop album such as All Saint's Saints And Sinners, however, and the old speakers would have sapped much of the enjoyment of the music by highlighting its bright and thin quality. The GR 20s are equally revealing, but better balanced tonally because of improved low-end presence and greater refinement in the higher frequencies. Less-than-perfect recordings are shown for what they are, but they are not butchered at the expense of musical enjoyment.
This is a two-and-a-half-way design, which means that the lower of the two large drivers helps out the upper mid/bass unit only at the lowest frequencies. That ensures the GR 20s are more than capable of pumping out heavy basslines with fine articulation and plenty of fury.
Midrange performance is terrific too; these Monitor Audio's are able to paint vocals with purity and precision. Unlike some speakers that use metal coned drive units, there's not even a hint of hardness in this area, and this makes it easy to get drawn into the music.
The Monitor Audios also impress with the excellent way in which they handle dynamics. Transients hit hard and fast, with little overhang or smearing, and this means that the leading edges of notes are superbly defined. This makes it easier to follow different instruments, particularly in a very dense mix.
Whiles there's no doubting that the GR 20s produce great results, it can take a little work to get there. These speakers take an inordinately long time to run in: it fact, our review samples took no less than 100 hours of continuous running before sounding their best. Before this point they had a slight hardness in the lower treble area and lacked just a little realism.
Persevere, though, and you'll be well rewarded. Monitor Audio has made an immensely accomplished pair of speakers in the GR 20s. In sonic and physical terms there is little to criticise; even the price is highly competitive. We have no choice but to recommend them highly.
The Right Stuff
Monitor Audio has developed a new driver line-up for its Gold Reference range. The tweeter is a 25mm alloy unit made from metal only 0.03mm thick, and then coated with a ceramic. The result is a dome with exceptional rigidity and lightness. The same qualities are evident in the company's Rigid Surface Technology (RST®) cone used in the GR 20s' 16.5cm mid/bass and bass drivers. These use a dimpled alloy cone that allows MA to reduce mass while increasing stiffness. The combination of these drive units results in the speaker having a sensitivity of 89dB/W/m and nominal impedance of 6 ohms - an easy drive for most amplifiers

Hej Ledzepp! Mvh fbk |
