Overview:
NHTPro's A-20 Studio Reference Monitor System is the ultimate in high-end sonic reproduction for project, commercial and post studios, combining remarkable precision, neutrality and dynamics with practical ergonomic design.
The A-20 system is the culmination of all of our experience and technologies, and represents the ultimate expression of our belief in audio excellence.
System Design Modular design incorporating a pair of 2-way, acoustic suspension monitors and system specific Control Amplifier.
Driver Complement The A-20 employs a massive, long-throw 6.5" treated paper woofer in a sturdy cast frame and a 1" aluminum dome ferro-fluid cooled tweeter, both magnetically shielded (a 12"+ distance from computer monitors is still recommended, due to the size of the woofer magnet).
The aluminum dome tweeter represents a marriage of state of the art design and manufacturability. Using both a microfabric surround at the edge termination and ferro-fluid in the voice coil gap for proper damping, the "ringing" sometimes found in such designs has been banished. In addition, the tweeter's "under-hung" motor design reduces voice coil mass to ensure linear high frequency response and low distortion -- even at the highest power levels.
Unique technologies characterize the A-20's 6.5" woofer, as well. Curvilinear cone design improves high frequency response, and back edge mitering of the outer cone minimizes cone related standing waves, giving pure uncolored reproduction. In addition, vibration dampening butyl rubber surround material subdues standing waves in the cone body, which in turn reduces undesirable mid and high frequency cone resonance. The result - more music, less speaker.
Impulse Response Control A speaker's "impulse response," measured in the time domain, is a direct analogy to the change of air pressure in response to a transient electrical signal. Accurate impulse response is a primary necessity in achieving precise stereo imaging.
Tweeter sound radiating far off-axis can compromise impulse response. Some of it, traveling directly along the front baffle, reaches a sharp leading edge and diffracts towards the listener, distorting the shape of the impulse, and with it, degrading both image accuracy and tonal purity. Still more bounces off the sidewall, with similar negative effects.
To control this, we use a highly absorbent foam strip near the outer edge of the A-20 cabinet, which reduces the most deleterious off-axis radiation and keeps the impulse response measurably cleaner and stereo imaging audibly more precise. This also reduces the influence of varying acoustical properties of the sidewalls, which means that mixes remain less dependent on differences from location to location.
Enclosure:
The angled A-20 cabinets are manufactured from 3/4" MDF (medium density fiberboard) and high pressure laminates both internally and externally. This construction provides a structurally rigid, acoustically neutral enclosure.
The A-20's precisely angled baffles employ our proprietary cabinet technology (see Technology pages) to deliver accurate spatial imaging across the whole range of a surprisingly wide sweet spot.
In addition, power indicating LEDs are located on the front of each monitor for ease of visibility. The A-20 connects to its companion control amplifier via XLR connectors and supplied matched-impedance cables.
A-20 Control Amplifier: As it can be less than technically desirable to build an amplifier of the A-20s high power into monitor enclosures themselves, NHTPro instead employs a modular approach -- separating amplifier from monitor enclosures.
This approach not only offers superior heat dissipation, but also eliminates potential vibration induced problems, thus allowing higher power levels and improved headroom. As a result, the A-20 Control Amplifier, featuring dual-mono construction with discrete output devices, delivers 250W RMS/CH (400W peak), while taking up only two rack spaces.
Ergonomically, this modular design puts the A-20's user controls, all of which are located on the front of the amplifier, within reach of the listening position, and its unique system status display shows AC line voltage, heat sink temperature and sound pressure level.
Controls
Boundary Proximity: A five-position low frequency compensation circuit for adjusting the system's bass response for corner placement (three boundaries), mid-room room placement (zero boundaries), or anywhere in between. This helps minimize the effects of room positioning by maintaining a consistent, flat power response in a variety of positions or differing locations.
Distance Proximity: To adjust for the subtle high frequency change that occurs when moving from the near field to the mid-field and to the far-field, the A-20 Control Amplifier features a five-position proximity control. This compensates for the decreasing ratio of direct to reflected sound as a listener moves from the near-field to the far-field and between, assuring the same high frequency response at all listening positions.
Switchable Input Sensitivity: The A-20 Control amplifier provides a five-position input sensitivity control with settings at +11dB, +4dB, -3dB, -10dB, and Mute. This not only provides for noise free gain matching with virtually any output device, but also allows the listener to easily turn off the monitors when other playback systems are desired.
High Output, Low Distortion: The rigors of professional audio require systems that are capable of long-term high output without listener fatigue, of which distortion is a primary contributor. The A-20 system delivers 117dB short term SPL while maintaining an impressive THD specification of < 0.4% (90dB, 100Hz~10kHz @1M).
